What will happen, when creating dreadlocks, if a residue free shampoo is NOT used?

I am planning on doing my boyfriend's dreadlocks. I am personally buying the materials, but I'm on a tight budget. To save money, i was thinking about holding off on the recommended residue-free shampoo. However, I'm worried wether this will have a bad affect on the outcome of the dreadlocks. What will happen, when creating dreadlocks, if a residue free shampoo is NOT used?
Ah, your other answer is totally wrong; sorry people on Yahoo answers can be so silly.

I assume you are starting by backcombing? Just a comment, I'd advise against wax : )

Onto your question, if you aren't using a residue free shampoo you will get buildup, this can lead to smelly dreads and just ickiness in general %26gt;.%26lt; It's not the worst thing in the world but it's really not good to make a habit out of washing with regular shampoos, it's better as an occasional thing.

Have you looked into common residue free shampoos? Here's an answer I gave on residue free shampoos you can get at regular drug stores / walmart etc:

Something I don't think I mentioned in there, you can even just use common dish soap. I know people that use it regularly as shampoo and I've used it multiple times when I go home and don't feel like bringing any other shampoo. It makes sense that it has to be residue free, because you don't want residue on your dishes and stuff : ) Some people don't like how strong it is, I'd definitely say give it a shot though, very cheap and convenient.

Feel free to use the link in my profile to email me if there's anything else I can do for you : )What will happen, when creating dreadlocks, if a residue free shampoo is NOT used?
Creating dreadlocks?

From my knowledge we don't create dreadlocks..

You stop combing your hair for along duration of time..

And you begin to twist and apply beeswax to the hair to make the twists stick..

Thats what rastas do..

I don't know about the other 'methods'..

And y do you want you bf to have dreadlocks..

they stink you know..
